Trojan Depo: How the Trojans saved Tressel, the Buckeyes and the BCS...
Let's go hypothetical for a moment: Suppose that USC wasn't on Ohio State's '08 schedule. Now imagine if this very same Buckeye team that we saw last Saturday had somehow managed to march past Penn State, Illinois and Michigan, all the way through the end of the season undefeated. Imagine if this same Buckeye team, that couldn't even score a single touchdown, attempted yet another BCS title game with delusions of grandeur but performance of piss...
Ladies and gentlemen, keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times, or Rey Maualuga might just take them to the house...you're about to enter the Trojan Depo.
If the NO-hio State Championship debacles of '06 and '07 happened to repeat for a third year in a row, there's no way the BCS system could survive the hurricane of discontent that would ensue. Hardcore college football enthusiasts would be shutting off their TVs after the first quarter. No viewers = nobody to watch the ads; nobody to watch the ads, no sponsorships; no sponsorships, no money...no money spells the end of the BCS as we know it. Sure on occasion the BCS games are epic, but they have been more miss than hit. And the television industry doesn't get by on misses, that's why hundreds of series are canceled before they ever get through their first season. Viewers are fickle and nobody tunes in to watch something suck.
So at least USC put Ohio State out of its misery early on. For that, the Buckeyes should thank them. Now Jim Tressel now has a chance to become a hero by saving the Buckeye season, rather than getting blamed for steering it into another train wreck.
